NEUROTHERAPY RESEARCH
Empirical Basis of Neurofeedback
There have been many studies comparing neurofeedback to stimulant medication, traditional addiction treatment and other medication and behavioral interventions for a wide variety of conditions. These studies have been published in peer reviewed professional journals and have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of neurofeedback when compared to other approaches.
According to the Child And Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics of North America Journal, 2005; 1-19:14: "Five controlled studies have been published, including one Randomized Controlled Trial uniformly showing significant benefit for 70% to 80% of participants, with an effect size for Neurofeedback equivalent to that of stimulants." According to the Journal, "Neurofeedback meets the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, (AACAP) criteria for 'Clinical Guidelines' for treatment of ADHD, seizure disorders, anxiety (eg, obsessive-compulsive disorder, GAD, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias), depression, learning disabilities and addictive disorders. This finding suggests that Neurofeedback always should be considered as an intervention for these disorders by the clinician." As a result, a growing number of health care providers have made neurotherapy part of their practice.
Dr. Frank Duffy, a noted Harvard Neurologist, wrote in an editorial about Neurofeedback after doing an in-depth review of the literature: "In my opinion, if any medication had demonstrated such a wide spectrum of efficacy, it would be universally accepted and widely used." - Clinical EEG and Neuroscience, January 2000

THE NEUROTHERAPY EXPERIENCE
Since neurotherapy is not yet widely known as a treatment modality, most people entering a neurotherapy treatment program are understandably curious about what it will entail for them in terms of specific procedures, treatment effects, and the number of sessions necessary to resolve their complaint.

Low Energy Neurofeedback System (LENS)
The neurofeedback treatment modalilty used at Renaissance Therapy Clinic is LENS, which has shown itself to be dramatically effective with a variety of problems involving dysregulation of the Central Nervous System.
This treatment consists of feeding-back to the person, through extremely low energy fields, a gentle EEG-driven signal based on the dominant brainwave rhythm. With this method, the EEG leads serve as bi-directional conduits for both the brainwaves and the feedback signals. No special effort is required of the recipient; merely to sit quitely and allow whatever experiences emerge. Jagged, low frequency, high amplitude, brainwaves soften and diminish with each session.
The LENS helps to increase functioning in whatever domains are lacking. It doesn't put in anything that wasn't there in the first place. It only optimizes functioning for those that fundamentally have the neurological substructure in place. Having done this optimizing, personal attention and work is still needed to make things better: the LENS improves no skills. It just makes it possible for skills to improve with work.
Most clients acquire a greater sense of clarity, of self-control, of being in balance. LENS, as a disentrainment procedure, seems to "till the soil" of the brain and nervous system, gently preparing it for change. Combined with counseling, LENS is highly effective to accelerate psychotherapy treatment goals.

SMART Braingames
Traditional neurofeedback is direct training of the brain, which then learns to function with greater control and stability. This is a gradual learning process of training in self-regulation.
SMART (Self Mastery and Regulation Training) BrainGames, the ONLY neurofeedback technology developed, patented and tested at NASA, is often used at Renaissance Therapy Clinic with children as a complementary modality to LENS.
SMART Video ClipThe SMART BrainGame System is designed to improve focus, concentration, memory and learning skills in any individual while having fun playing regular off-the-shelf video games or watching a DVD movie.
Neurofeedback exercises and conditions the brain to improve its capabilities. As one uses SMART BrainGames and the brain is effectively conditioned, the benefits are realized across ALL conditions - whether it is concentrating in the classroom or workplace, doing homework or chores - the brain is now working at a more efficient level so improvements are realized in ALL areas!
